The History of Stud Earrings: From Ancient Times to Modern Fashion

Aug 22 2025

Stud earrings may be tiny, but they carry a big history. These little gems have been part of human adornment for thousands of years, evolving with cultures, trends, and technology. Let’s take a sparkling trip back in time!

Ancient Origins

  • Egyptians (around 3,000 BC): Gold studs were worn by both men and women as a sign of wealth and status. Pharaohs and nobles often chose precious stones set in gold.

  • Greece & Rome: Studs became more decorative, often shaped like animals or symbolic motifs. They were also worn to highlight one’s social standing.

  • India & Asia: Earrings were deeply rooted in tradition and spirituality, with studs often crafted from gold and gemstones to attract good fortune.

Middle Ages & Renaissance

During these times, earrings fell out of fashion in Europe because of high collars and elaborate hairstyles that hid the ears. Rings, necklaces, and brooches took center stage instead.

The 18th & 19th Centuries

When hairstyles changed, ears came back into focus. Stud earrings resurfaced as a subtle and elegant option for women. Diamonds and pearls became popular choices, symbolizing class and sophistication.

20th Century to Today

  • 1920s–1960s: Studs became a must-have accessory for the modern woman, especially with the rise of Hollywood glamour.

  • 1970s–1990s: Piercing culture expanded, with studs being a staple for everyday wear.

  • Modern Day: Stud earrings now range from minimalist designs to bold statement pieces, made from a variety of materials—gold, silver, brass, stainless steel, and even eco-friendly alternatives.

Why They Endure: Stud earrings are timeless because they’re versatile, comfortable, and stylish. From ancient pharaohs to fashion-forward influencers, studs have always been a jewelry box essential.
